Deadly Amoeba Strikes Again: Kerala Mourns Loss of 14-Year-Old to Brain-Eating Infection

In a tragic turn of events, a 14-year-old boy from Kozhikode, Kerala, has succumbed to a rare and often fatal brain infection caused by a free-living amoeba found in contaminated water. EP Mridul, a class 7 student at Farook Higher Secondary School, passed away on July 3, marking the third such death in Kerala since May.The infection, known as amoebic meningoencephalitis, is caused by the "Naegleria fowleri" amoeba, commonly referred to as the "brain-eating amoeba." This microscopic organism typically enters the body through the nose and migrates to the brain, where it feeds on nerve tissue and causes severe inflammation.Mridul's tragic demise comes after the deaths of two other children from Malappuram and Kannur districts who also fell victim to this rare disease earlier this year. The young victim had reportedly bathed in a pond before falling ill, prompting officials to warn the public against using the contaminated water source.Symptoms of amoebic meningoencephalitis usually start within 1-9 days after exposure and include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, altered mental status, and hallucinations. The disease progresses rapidly, often resulting in death within 1-12 days after symptoms begin.Health authorities have advised people to exercise caution against amoebic meningoencephalitis and have urged the public to avoid swimming or bathing in warm freshwater, such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs. The infection is not transmitted from human to human. The recent spate of deaths has once again highlighted the need for increased awareness and preventive measures to combat this rare but deadly disease. As Kerala mourns the loss of yet another young life, it is crucial that health officials work tirelessly to identify and eliminate potential sources of contamination, while educating the public on the risks and symptoms associated with amoebic meningoencephalitis. In the face of such a devastating loss, the community must come together to support the grieving family and honor the memory of EP Mridul. By raising awareness and promoting proactive measures, we can work towards preventing future tragedies and ensuring the safety of all those who call Kerala home.
