In a tragic incident in Moirang, a town in Manipur's Bishnupur district, an elderly man was killed during a rocket-propelled bomb attack while he was offering prayers. The attack, attributed to suspected insurgents, also left five others injured, including a 13-year-old girl, marking a troubling escalation of violence in the region.

Details of the Attack

The rocket struck near the residence of Manipur's first Chief Minister, Mairembam Koireng Singh, located just 100 meters from the Indian National Army (INA) Museum, a historical site dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Eyewitnesses reported that the rocket appeared to have been launched from the hills, with the museum likely being the intended target.The victim, a member of the Meitei community, suffered fatal injuries from shrapnel that struck his head, resulting in a tragic scene as blood spilled onto the ground amidst his prayer offerings of leaves and fruit. Dressed in traditional white attire, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Recent Violence in the Region

This incident marks the second rocket attack in the area on the same day, following an earlier attack in the morning that caused damage to two structures but resulted in no injuries. Police reported that the rockets fired that morning had a range exceeding three kilometers. Security forces responded to the insurgent fire from the hills, indicating an ongoing conflict in the region.The recent spate of violence has raised concerns among residents, particularly following a series of drone and rocket attacks attributed to suspected Kuki insurgents. Just days prior, two individuals were killed, and several others, including a minor, were injured in similar attacks.

The use of weaponized drones and long-range sniper rifles has been confirmed in recent assaults, leading to fears of escalating violence and instability in Manipur. As the situation develops, authorities are on high alert, and residents remain anxious about their safety amid the ongoing conflict.
