Vinesh Phogat's Weight Gain Mystery: Nutritionist's Insights on Disqualification

Vinesh Phogat's journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics took an unexpected turn when she was disqualified from the women's 50kg wrestling final due to a sudden weight gain. Initially weighing 49.9 kg during the weigh-in on August 6, Vinesh found herself overweight by nearly 3 kg after competing in three intense bouts, raising questions about how a wrestler could gain such weight in a short span.

The situation stems from a combination of miscalculations and unfortunate circumstances. Wrestlers often compete below their natural weight to gain a strength advantage, and Vinesh, whose typical weight hovers around 56 kg, had been competing in the 53 kg category. However, she reduced her weight further to secure an Olympic quota after the 53 kg spot was filled by Antim Panghal.Typically, wrestlers undergo rigorous weight-cutting regimes that involve strict food and water restrictions, excessive training, and sauna sessions leading up to the weigh-in. After making weight, they are allowed a light meal and hydration to restore energy levels before their matches. This process can lead to a temporary weight gain, which Vinesh's coaches anticipated would be around 1.5 kg. Unfortunately, the reality was a shocking increase of 2.7 kg.Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the Chief Medical Officer of the Indian wrestling contingent, expressed disappointment over the outcome, explaining that every possible method was employed to keep Vinesh within the weight limit. Despite the team's efforts, including drastic measures like cutting her hair, she was still found to be 100 grams over the permissible limit during the weigh-in for her gold medal bout.International regulations dictate that any wrestler who exceeds the weight limit is automatically placed at the bottom of the standings, a devastating blow for Vinesh, especially after her impressive victory over defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the semifinals. Her disqualification means that only one bronze medal will be awarded in the 50 kg category, instead of the usual two.The Indian wrestling team is now grappling with a mix of frustration and sorrow over this unexpected turn of events, as they reflect on the challenges faced by athletes in high-stakes competitions.
